چکیده

A network of secreted proteins that interact with each other in the extracellular space regulates embryonic morphogenesis. Mathematical modeling offers an excellent opportunity to understand how morphogens signal and self-regenerate pattern.

Morphogens: Precise Outputs from a Variable Gradient

The morphogen gradient as a source of embryonic patterning is one of the best accepted concepts in developmental biology. Morphogens can be transcription factors or extracellular signals, but in both cases, they are thought to provide concentration thresholds that position different cell fates within the developing embryo. Several recent papers examine the patterning activities of Drosophila Bi...

Synapse Specificity: Wnts Keep Motor Axons on Target

New studies on the molecular logic of synapse specificity in the fly and worm have brought neurobiologists back to an ancient family of morphogens best known for establishing pattern in the early embryonic nervous system.

Nodal morphogens.

Nodal signals belong to the TGF-beta superfamily and are essential for the induction of mesoderm and endoderm and the determination of the left-right axis. Nodal signals can act as morphogens-they have concentration-dependent effects and can act at a distance from their source of production. Nodal and its feedback inhibitor Lefty form an activator/inhibitor pair that behaves similarly to postul...

Mathematical model of the formation of morphogen gradients through membrane-associated non-receptors.

The importance of morphogens is a central concept in developmental biology. Multiple-fate patterning and the robustness of the morphogen gradient are essential for embryo development. The ways by which morphogens diffuse from a local source to form long distance gradients can differ from one morphogen to the other, and for the same morphogen in different organs. This paper will study the mechan...

Organoids and the genetically encoded self‐assembly of embryonic stem cells

Understanding the mechanisms of early embryonic patterning and the timely allocation of specific cells to embryonic regions and fates as well as their development into tissues and organs, is a fundamental problem in Developmental Biology. The classical explanation for this process had been built around the notion of positional information. Accordingly the programmed appearance of sources of Mor...
